As part of the NFL Weekly In-Depth Analysis series we present the clash between the Carolina Panthers and the San Francisco 49ers. This is a 4:05 PM EST game that will be played at Candlestick Park as the 6-2 San Francisco 49ers host the 5-3 Carolina Panthers. Here are the Vegas odds for the game and what the Sports Unbiased In-Depth Analysis Team believes will occur this Sunday. The writers taking part are: Josh Madas, Mike Santangelo and John Yeomans.
Vegas Odds (Spread and Over-Under): San Francisco minus 6, 43 u
John’s Pick: Both teams started the season on the wrong foot (49ers 1-2 and Panthers 1-3) but have been on fire as of late ( 49ers five game winning streak and Panthers four games). These teams also play with the same strategy; feed the running backs (Panthers average 130.1 yards a game and 49ers 153) the ball and play stalwart defense (Panthers ranked third in total defense and 49ers sixth), which they both excel at. What’s even crazier is they also share the same weakness which is the passing game (Panthers ranked 25th and 49ers 32nd), although they both have playmakers that can put on a show (ex. Steve Smith, Vernon Davis).
To say the least, this should be a slobber knocker that in my opinion will be Cam Newton’s true test on how much he has grown in the maturity department. Newton has to keep his composure if things start going wrong or not let up and get cocky if they’re going right. With that out of the way, no matter if Newton passes the test or not; I believe with their veteran experience and home field advantage the 49ers keep their winning streak alive. The main thing that had me side with the 49ers was how even in victory last week the Panther let tight end Tony Gonzalez burn them (six receptions, 81 receiving yards, and one touchdown). I see San Francisco using this same tactic with Vernon Davis; expect the 49ers’s also have a running game to counter it with unlike the Falcons (ranked 32nd in rushing). San Francisco 24 Carolina 23
Josh’s Pick: The Panthers are quickly becoming a scary team. At 5-3, they have had some major wins and have lost three close games. They could easily be 6-2 or 7-1 at this point. Cam Newton is playing like a superstar and the return of Jonathan Stewart makes them even stronger in the backfield.
So far the 49ers have been a shell of what they were last season. They are still playing extremely well and have put themselves in great position to win the division. However, I think the entire league was expecting them to steam roll through and be the clear favorite entering into playoffs. Unfortunately, this has not been the case.
San Francisco is the better team, but Carolina is playing great football at the moment. I am picking the Panthers to steal a win on the road this weekend against the 49ers. Final Score: Carolina 21 San Francisco 17
Mike’s Pick: This could be our game of the week. Both teams sport young, hungry quarterbacks who have just started to come in to their own. And while the defense of the 49ers was expected to be good this year, no one expected the Panthers defense to be as good as they are – 1st in rushing defense, 7th in passing, 2nd in scoring, and 2nd overall. Both teams, meanwhile, have not been very good offensively, ranking 21st and 24th overall. So, this game will come down to one thing, the QB play of these young, dynamic quarterbacks. I think Cam is having a better season than Kaepernick and is more ready for this match, but the 49ers are at home, so I think they pull this one off by the narrowest of margins. Final Score: San Francisco 17 Carolina 14
