As part of the NFL Weekly In-Depth Analysis series we present the clash between the Detroit Lions and the Chicago Bears. This is a 1:00 PM EST game that will be played at Soldier Field as the 5-3 Chicago Bears host the 5-3 Detroit Lions. Here are the Vegas odds for the game and what the Sports Unbiased In-Depth Analysis Team believes will occur this Sunday. The writers taking part are: Josh Madas, Mike Santangelo and John Yeomans.
Vegas Odds (Spread and Over-Under): Detroit minus 2 1/2, 52 1/2 u
John’s Pick: The Lions and Bears clashed in week four where Reggie Bush (18 carries, 139 rushing yards one touchdown) ran right through the Bears defense which helped the Lions get the victory. So expect the Bears to pay close attention to Bush in this game.
As for the quarterback situation in Chicago; one minute reports say Cutler’s ready to go and then they change to saying he’s not sure. No matter what the case is, Cutler’s back-up Josh McCown has played honorable (averaging 238 passing yards a game and has thrown three touchdowns in past two games) so quarterback playing shouldn’t be a problem for Chicago.
Even though the Bears are playing better on offense (ranked 10th and averaging 30 points a game) than in years past, when you look at the stats the Lions seem to have the edge (ranked third in total offenses). However, when you dig deeper you will find that Calvin Johnson, who we all know is the Lions primary weapon, has been average at best against the Bears since 2010 ( averages 3.7 catches, 68 receiving yards, and 0.42 touchdowns). Because of this and with both defenses (Lions ranked 25th in total defense while the Bears rank 26th) pretty similar I’m going with the Bears in a tight one; no matter who starts for Chicago. Chicago 33 Detroit 30
Josh’s Pick: What a great matchup. The stingy Bears defense against the pass-happy Lions offense. Whether this game is being played in Chicago or Detroit, it is going to be a battle. The Bears were able to handle the Packers on Monday Night Football and will now look to handle the Lion’s potent offense. Though a little banged up, Chicago has found ways to win this season.
On the other side, the Lions have looked exceptional against tough teams and have shown they can win big games. Reggie Bush is making a case for Most Improved Player and Matthew Stafford is on another streak of passing yards per game. For the Lions to have a chance, they are going to have to get their playmakers the ball. If Calvin Johnson and Reggie Bush have big games, then Detroit is unstoppable.
Even though the Bears have been extremely impressive, I am picking the Lions to win this game. They have too many weapons for the injury prone Chicago team to handle. Final Score: Detroit 28 Chicago 17
Mike’s Pick: Last week the Bears managed to pull off a win over the division leading Packers, but it took Aaron Rodgers going down with a collarbone injury to do it. I don’t think they have that kind of luck in them 2 weeks in a row. While the Bears are a pretty good team, the Lions have been as potent a passing offense as there is in the NFL, ranking 2nd in that stat behind only the Broncos. The Bears, meanwhile, rank 20th in pass defense. There’s just too much going against the Bears this week, the Lions will pull this one off handily. Final Score: Detroit 31 Chicago 20
