As part of the NFL Weekly In-Depth Analysis series we present the clash between the Atlanta Falcons and the New York Jets. This is a Monday Night Football game to be played at 8:40 PM EST game at the Georgia Dome as the 1-3 Atlanta Falcons host the 2-2 New York Jets. Can rookie quarterback Geno Smith continue his maturation progress and help the Jets win on the road? Can Matt Ryan, Julio Jones and the rest of the Falcons hold serve at home? Here are the Vegas odds for the game and what the Sports Unbiased In-Depth Analysis Team believes will occur this Sunday. This week Chris Pagliuca, John Yeomans, “Coach” Mike Fabber and Mike Santangelo provide commentary on the game.
Vegas Odds: Falcons -10 43 ½ u
Chris’ Pick: Fun-fact, the New York Jets (2-2) have a better record than the Atlanta Falcons (1-3), no that’s not a misprint. However, the Jets play like a below average team, whereas the Falcons do not. The three losses the Falcons have suffered have come against two undefeated teams in the Saints and Patriots, as well as the 3-1 Dolphins. All three games they lost by have been by seven points or less. The Jets on the other hand got handed one of their two wins by the Buccaneers and most recently got trampled by the Tennessee Titans by a score of 38-13. Worst of all, both Santonio Holmes and Stephen Hill got injured in that game against the Titans and Holmes, who has looked great this season, will be out for a few weeks. There’s no way I can see the Jets winning this game. Final Score: Falcons 24 Jets 14
John’s Pick: I thought the Falcons would struggle more than most did this season because of their defense, but by no means did I see them starting 1-3. Then you have the Jets who have used tough defense (second ranked total defense) to surprise us with a 2-2 record, even with a rookie quarterback that has played up and down. Matt Ryan has done everything he can to win but with the running game clearly missing since Steven Jackson went down, defenses can concentrate solely on the passing game, which is making Ryan’s job even more difficult. The one thing Atlanta’s defense has done well is stop the run, which is the Jets best weapon on offense, so whoever wins this battle should come out as the victor. The Falcons are needing to get back on track and will be playing with a mean streak that will lead them to victory and show everybody the Jets are who we thought they were. Final Score: Falcons 28 Jets 10
Mike’s Pick: Look, in most fantasy football leagues, picking the defense that is playing the Jets for that week is a completely legitimate way of streaming defenses for maximum points. People are doing it in at least two of the leagues I’m in. The Falcons defense has not been great so far this year, but this is a great week for them to bounce back and gain some confidence. On the flip side, the Jets defense has actually been really good this year; ranking seventh against the rush, ninth against the pass, and third overall. Of course, the Jets have not played an offense with a set of receivers like they will see this week with Julio Jones, Roddy White, and Tony Gonzalez. I think the Jets defense gets exposed a little bit this week. They are not, and will not be considered, bad, but, this week they will come back down to earth as the receivers for the Falcons run a little wild. Final Score: Falcons 24 Jets 13
Coach’s Pick: The Jets have done better than most have thought they would do all year and have a little of a feel good story behind them. Jets defense is tough but offense is very unpredictable. Falcons have the best 1-3 team out there but talent isn’t adding up to wins. This is the game where they get back on track and beat up on the Jets. Final Score: Falcons 24 Jets 13
