I was very impressed by Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers running game today against the Falcons. During the first quarter, the 49ers were suffering a 17-0 deficit, down by more than two touchdowns. I started to get a bit concerned but I remembered how the Falcons are known to blow leads and allow the opponent back into the game. The Seahawks pulled off a miraculous 20-point comeback in the 4th quarter and almost defeated the Falcons at home; somehow the Falcons got a prayer answered, Matt Ryan completed a few clutch passes which put his team into field goal range and that was all she wrote.
Fast forward to today’s game, same scenario, the Falcons had a comfortable lead but allowed the 49ers back in the game. You have to tip your hat to Kaepernick, Frank Gore, and the 49ers defense for keeping the game close and finishing out the game by playing more aggressive football. The defense really picked it up late in the fourth and Kaepernick finished the game with 233 yards passing, 23 yards rushing and one touchdown.
Keep in mind the Baltimore defense is tough; they defeated the Patriots by playing bully-ball, hitting hard, and limiting their scoring ability, but Kaepernick and Brady are two different quarterbacks. Brady is primarily a pocket passer while Kaepernick is a dual threat, he can pass the ball with accuracy and he is one of the top quarterbacks this season at picking up yardage when running with the ball. This Kaepernick kid is very dangerous and Baltimore will have a tougher time dealing with him than they have had dealing with a healthy RG3 earlier in the season.
According to Elias Sports Bureau, the 49ers pulled off the biggest comeback victory ever in an NFC Championship Game. The previous record was 13 points in Atlanta’s defeat versus Minnesota in the 1999 NFC title game, which lead to a Falcons Super Bowl appearance and also a victory. The 49ers will face Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens in an epic battle of will, focus, and determination; all for the coveted Vince Lombardi trophy.
