The New York Jets are feeling confident in their win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as well as they should be. Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith was able to drive his team down the field with a little help for a game-winning field goal as the Jets fought back to defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 18-17 on Sunday. That help came from a penalty on Buccaneers Lavonte David. Trailing 17-15, Smith scrambled for 10 yards and was shoved while he was out of bounds by David. The 15-yard penalty put the ball at the Buccaneers 30, and Jets Kicker Nick Folk won it by kicking a 48 yard field goal with 2 seconds remaining.
After their exciting come from behind win over the Buccaneers on Sunday, the Jets now face a huge task as to how to beat the New England Patriots in Foxboro Thursday night on a short week. Don’t expect the Jets to get much help from the Patriots as they rarely lose or make that many mistakes playing at home.
While the Jets are feeling resilient from their win, the Patriots are hurting. The Patriots too came from behind to beat the Buffalo Bills on Sunday and won the game 23-21, but not without a cost.
Patriots RB Shane Vereen rushed for 101 yards on 14 carries, but he is expected to miss at least eight weeks after he broke a small bone in his left wrist. WR Danny Amendola caught 10 passes for 104 yards, but now has a nagging groin injury and is uncertain to suit up Thursday night.
“If we want to win our division, we have to beat the Patriots,” Jets head coach Rex Ryan said. “It’s going to be a huge challenge without question.”
Brady no longer has Wes Welker or Aaron Hernandez as key targets and TE Rob Gronkowski is still out with injuries, but the Jets know the man they must stop is still on the field.
“The Patriots are a different team now,” Ryan said. “But again, it’s New England and it starts with Tom Brady.”
Brady has completed 67.6 percent of his passes and thrown 13 touchdowns with one interception during the five-game regular-season winning streak against the Jets.
“It’s Boston vs. New York,” Brady said. “It’s going to be exciting. Hopefully, we can go out on a short week and win the game.”
Let’s not forget that the Jets still have a pretty decent defense. They are not as good in the secondary after losing Darrelle Revis, but they still have a solid defensive line and they should be able to put pressure on Brady.
New York Jets vs. New England Patriots Week 2 Prediction
I think the Patriots will find a way to win at home. They usually do, however, because the Patriots have some key injuries, it’s not going to be the blowout that people are expecting. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and his staff will find a way to rattle the young Geno Smith. I say the Patriots win by a touchdown and the final score will be 20-13.
