Nowadays the NCAA relies on a series of computer polls along with two human polls to determine the ranking of teams and where they are going to be placed for a bowl game. The problem with that? There are eight teams in the top 25 that have two losses, and three of them are 15th or higher, bet you can guess what conference they are. That’s right, the SEC.
Yes, it hasn’t been the best season for college football outside of the top five, but Louisville, a team who everyone agree has the best QB in this upcoming draft class, only has one lost and is 20th. Having them in the top 25 is fine with me I have no problem with that, my problem lies within.
As of this moment there are seven teams undefeated, Alabama, FSU, Oregon, OSU, Baylor, could you guess the other two? Probably not because they are not plastered all over ESPN and talked about because they aren’t in the big conference. The other two are Fresno State at number 16, and Northern Illinois at number 18. There are three teams with two losses above them in the polls, and ten with at least one loss. These teams have played their butts off, but will never be seen on a big stage because they won’t sell tickets, or no one will watch.
At the end of the day the teams that have earned it should play in the big bowls regardless of their conference or their past. Just because you have a winning history doesn’t mean they desire a good bowl game, especially if there is a team like Fresno State that has earned a spot in a good bowl. They have went undefeated something difficult to do regardless of their conference, as we see that shine true with only five other teams other than underrated Fresno State and Northern Illinois are still unbeaten at this point in the season. If you can go through your whole season and not lose a game then you should be rewarded with a top spot in the BCS standings and play in a serious bowl game, not one where they pin Fresno State against Northern Illinois, because that doesn’t solve anything
So what an undefeated team has a weak strength of schedule, they still have won every single game they have played, and I promise you no one said that these two teams would be would have no losses this far into the season, so at some point people saw them losing to some team along the way, and they didn’t so they should be credited with a nice ranking. Am I saying above Bama, FSU, Oregon, OSU, or Baylor? No, but am I saying top ten? Yes without a doubt in my mind Baylor should be number five, and Fresno State should be sixth and Northern Illinois seventh. They have earned that spot, they have went 8-0, and 9-0 throughout their season. People say “So you would have them beating Clemson?” Maybe, Clemson got crushed by FSU, so why would you assume that they would roll an undefeated team? And at least give Fresno State and Northern Illinois a chance at proving themselves on a big stage. I don’t want to see a team that I know can be beaten play in a national championship when there is an unbeaten out there. I want to see the unbeaten play to see if they can stay that way, not see a SEC team play because they are popular.
In 2006-07 Boise State went 13-0 and didn’t play in the national championship while the two teams that did, Florida and Ohio State, both ended the season with one loss. We will never know if Boise State was the best team in the NCAA because they weren’t given a chance.
In 2008-09 Utah did the same thing, going 13-0, and was ranked fourth and missed out on a national championship because they are in the MWC. Above them was Florida, USC, and Texas all with one loss, but Utah finished undefeated and we will never know if they were the best because they weren’t given a chance because they aren’t in a power house conference.
In the 2009-10 season Boise State got cheated again going 14-0 and not getting a chance to prove themselves in the national championship. Yes, that year two undefeated teams did play, but the fact that this happened twice to Boise State because they are in a weaker conference is unfair.
In the 2010-11 season TCU went undefeated and even finished first in the polls at the end of the season, but didn’t get to play in the championship game because they had to compete with Auburn and Oregon, and being in the MWC, they had no chance, so again we will never know how good TCU was because they never got the true test of a national championship. I’m not saying all of these teams were the greatest teams ever, but I’m saying they could have been, but we will never know.
So am I saying I want Fresno State in the national championship? No, this year there are other undefeated teams that deserve it more, but I’m advocating for the future – where if there is a MWC team that is unbeaten and they are the only team that is, it’s only fair that they are given a chance at the national championship because they earned it.
