Welcome to this week’s Writers’ Block. With the NCAA Men’s Tournament kicking off this afternoon (the real games, not the play-in games), we here at Sports Unbiased have finished our brackets and have decided who will win.
Here are the teams the writers have picked to win March Madness:
Adam: This year, more than ever, this tournament is wide open. You could make an argument for 7-10 teams that can win. I am going to approach this from a betting perspective. With that in mind nobody is worth the short money. Gonzaga is the fourth choice in the betting line at 10/1. People will talk about their conference as a driving force for their record but it is much more than that. Their out of conference schedule includes the likes of West Virginia, Clemson, Oklahoma, Illinois, Kansas State and so on. It is not a cakewalk for them to get to 31-2. They have one of the bet frontcourts in the country in Kelly Olynyk and Elias Harris. For return on my money they are my choice to win it all.
Rich: This is the most wide-open tourney in recent memory – it’s anyone’s to win. My pick is Louisville. Winning the Big East Conference Tournament is no easy challenge and just like the Kemba Walker-led UCONN Huskies several years ago, Louisville will ride the Big East Tourney win to a win in March Madness.
Kureen: Louisville Cardinals because they play defense, have good guard play and can rebound.
Kimani: Indiana were preseason favorites and I don’t see any reason to change now. They were the best team in what many considered the best conference in college basketball. They have good guard play with Oladipo and company, they shoot 40% from 3-pt land, experience and a low post game with Cody Zeller.
JR: My pick is Miami. They’ve got a nice frontcourt and size along with experience and are tough and nasty in the post. They won the regular season and ACC tournament titles. I think it’s Miami’s time to step out of the shadow of the football program and win the national title.
Sammie: My pick is Miami. Larkin as the scorer and the leader and the size of their backcourt will be the difference. The ability to put up big numbers and tough defense will be key.
