According to the NBA official website, Russell Westbrook is out for the first round of the 2013 NBA Playoffs and quite possibly the the second round at the very least. This is a huge blow to the Oklahoma City Thunder and their run at repeating as the Western Conference Champions.
With Westbrook sidelined, the Thunder lose their quickest and most effective slasher and their second-best scorer on the team. Westbrook suffered the injury Wednesday night in a close but well fought victory versus the Houston Rockets. He has been an offensive nightmare for the Houston Rockets because of his quickness when driving to the basket and his ability to pull-up for the mid-range jumper.
Will the Thunder advance to the next round without their All-star? I say yes but my gut instinct tells me that the Thunder will have a difficult time in the Western Conference Semi-Finals versus the winner of the San Antonio Spurs/Denver series if Westbrook fails to make at least an 75% recovery. This is not a good look for OKC at the moment, but they still have the second-best player on the planet right now in Kevin Durant, so I wouldn’t write them off just yet. Westbrook is a young player who should heal quick but if you’re the opposing team, his injury definitely works out on favor of the opposition.
