Allen Iverson received praise at the very first NBA Players Choice Awards where he was honored as a “Game Changer” — a player who changed the culture and attitude of the entire league during his height as an NBA Superstar. The Hampton Virginia native delivered an emotional speech where he gave praise to Michael Jordan for giving him the motivation and vision to become a professional basketball player.
“This award is one of the most special awards that I’ve ever received because it come from yall”, said Iverson to the large audience complete with current and past NBA players.
His speech got even more emotional when he talked about his post NBA life…
“When I leave out of the crib every day, people always say to me, “What up, AI?’” Iverson said. “I tell them the same thing 99.9 percent of the time. I tell them, ‘the same fight, different round.’ This world is a world title fight. Some days you’re going to get knocked down. Some rounds are going to be good. Some are going to be bad. The only thing that matters is getting back up and fighting again.”
Iverson embraced Hip Hop culture and shook-up the NBA with his bad boy persona and no fear attitude, and while he never won an NBA title, he was the 2001 NBA MVP and Won 4 NBA scoring titles.
He continues to be celebrated as one of the toughest and talented point guards of all-time, and while he was mostly ridiculed for his problems off the court, he will be celebrated for his actions on the court.
