Another great game between the Wizards and Hawks was decided once again by the late heroics by a player in the right place at the right time. Paul Pierce had seemingly put the nail in the coffin after he sank a corner three-pointer, giving his team a one point lead with less than :08 seconds to go in regulation.
The crowd was left stunned, however, Pierce’s shot would not mark the end of the game as Hawks center Al Horford‘s game winning put-back with :01 second to spare would seal the deal for his team and give them a commanding 3-2 lead in the series.
The Wizards controlled most of the third quarter leading by as much as nine points, but the Hawks would rally back and go a 10-0 run to take the lead heading into the fourth quarter with a score of 63-62.
During the final quarter, each team traded baskets, and the outcome of the game could have wen’t either way but the player of the game was Horford who lead his team with 23 points and 11 rebounds. His game winning shot gave the Hawks a comfortable lead as they head into the Verizon Center with a chance to closeout the series.
Al Horford said after the game — “I wasn’t supposed to be involved in the play at all… when I saw the ball go up, I just ran in there.” “We’re happy, but we understand it’s one game.”
Can the Hawks close out the series or will the Wizards force a game 7? Team S.U. recap and predict game 7.
FINAL SCORE: ATL 82 – WAS 81
Hawks vs. Wizards Game 6 Predictions:
Steve Turner (NBA Contributor): Game 5 of the Wizards/Hawks series was very intense. It came down to the wire again and the Hawks managed to come out on top. Al Horford had an amazing game, and he provided a great spark both offensively and defensively. In addition to his amazing performance, Horford hit the clutch shot that won the game for the Hawks.
Despite having the wrist injury, John Wall had an amazing game for the Wizards even though his team didn’t win. I think the Hawks have what it takes to finish this series up in game 6. Although they are playing in Washington, the Hawks have the momentum and the energy they need to defeat the Wizards and advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Game 6 Prediction: The Wizards are going to battle, but I think ATL is going to win it 96-93.
Sauping R. Arguello (NBA Contributor): The Atlanta Hawks pulled off a last second win, returning the favor to Paul Pierce and the Washington Wizards. Pierce hit a game winner in game 3 and a big corner three with eight seconds left- putting the Wizards up one. Al Horford (23 pts, 11 reb, 5 blk) grabbed a monster rebound off a missed drive from Dennis Schroder and put in the winning basket with one second remaining.
