Canada was rocked off its hinges Monday night when WWE Champion John Cena returned to Raw just eight days after his last man standing match with Ryback for the WWE tittle. The “Cenation” wasted little time addressing Ryback’s challenge for an ambulance match at “Payback” Next month. Cena told the crowd he had time to think about Payback saying:
“Payback should be definitive, payback should be deliberate, and Payback should be hell!”
Cena had a different idea of hell then Ryback did as he challenged the animal to a “Three stages of hell match” featuring a “Lumber Jack” match, a Table match, and then finally an Ambulance match. Ryback quickly accepted the challenge and continued with the theme of hell telling Cena “Say hello to Beelzebub, say hello to Lucifer, say hello to Satan” say hello to Ryback before returning backstage.
John Cena’s night wasn’t over yet as Curtis Axel took the stage next to his manager Pual Heyman and challenged Cena to a match at the end of the night. Cena responded telling Axel he had a lot of guts taking on Triple H last week, but need to take some advice and get as far away from Pual Heyman as he could.
Axel took the insult towards his manager very seriously telling the “Cenation” leader to mind his own business. After the two superstars exchanged a few more words John Cena accepted the challenge to face off against Curtis Axel, much to the delight of Axel and Heyman.
Momentum heading into the match was definitely in Axel’s favor having beaten Sin Cara last Friday night on SmackDown, and Triple H in his debut as a “Paul Heyman guy” last Monday night on Raw. The match belonged to Axel early on as he kept Cena on defense with great reversals and punches. The bout spilled to ringside where Cena was “Irish Whipped” into the ringside steps knocking the “Cenation” leader to floor. Fans looked on as Cena struggled to get back in the ring and answer the ten count to continue the match.
Back in the ring Cena was dominated once again by the up and coming Axel as he locked a punishing Front face lock on the WWE Champion holding him in the center of the ring. The fans rallied behind Cena as he broke the hold and nailed Axel with a shoulder block.
With momentum now shifting and the WWE universe making their presence known, Cena hit Axel with the side slam before bouncing of the ropes and nailing him with the “five knuckle shuffle.” Cena then tried to end the match by hitting his finishing move the “A.A” on Axel, but Axel was able to work his way out of the hold.
The match continued on when an ambulance sped its way into the arena and caught the attention of Cena who quickly went to the stage ready to fight his rival Ryback. Cena hesitantly threw open the side door of the ambulance looking for signs of the animal. When Cena saw it was empty he went to the back of the ambulance quickly swinging open the double doors ready for a battle with Ryback.
A bewildered Cena looked on as Ryback attacked him from behind clubbing him in the back with punishing punches. Cena gained the upper hand as they battling their way up the ramp to the center of the stage. Ryback got a lucky shot on Cena and set him up for a spear as the superstar laid dangerously close to the same LED lights he had been crashed through just eight nights ago at “Extreme Rules”. Ryback charged at the “Cenation” leader, but a timely reversal saw Ryback in Cena’s clutches for the “Attitude Adjustment”. Not wanting to be beaten by Cena, Ryback reversed the move pushing Cena off the ramp and onto the hard concrete floor. Ryback quickly ran backstage leaving Cena frustrated, and an ecstatic Curtis Axel smiling knowing he just beat the best wrestler in the WWE today.
I’m personally glad that WWE has added some spice to the already tiring Ryback versus Cena storyline. Adding Curtis Axel into the picture should put a lot of doubt in fans minds that their Three stages of hell match at “Payback” Will end clean. Who’s to say Axel won’t just crash Cena’s and Ryback’s party come “Payback”, and be Cena’s next challenger for the WWE title?
The night also took another unexpected turn during Chris Jericho’s Highlight Reel when “Y2J” began pestering his guest Pual Heyman about CM Punk’s return to the WWE. Heyman started to sweat it out saying that he would have an announcement concerning his clients return in the next two weeks. The answer didn’t sit well with Jericho who claimed that if Punk just sits at home he can’t claim to be the best in the world.
Heyman became desperate to defend his clients honor in front of Jericho and the WWE Universe before Y2J could do any more damage to the Second City Saints good name. The mad scientist finally gave in and gave Jericho a match against CM Punk in Chicago at “Payback.”
I think CM Punk’s return could have been a lot more glorious than what WWE Creative wants to make it out to be. I personally thought Punk would be launched right into the championship conversation upon his return, not facing off against the guy that was used to put Fandango over.
Who do you think should have challenged Cm Punk to match at “Payback”? Does the three stages of Hell match make the pay per view must see? Do you think Curtis Axel could be a WWE Champion one day? Let me know in the comments below.
