The following decisions all received one third-place ranking (for a total of one point total).
Kimani: Grady Little – 2003 ALCS Game 7: The Red Sox were up 5-2 with five outs remaining from the World Serires. Their ace Pedro Martinez was now over 100 pitches and the Sox bullpen had been tremendous throughout the entire ALCS. The statistics showed CLEARLY that hitters’ averages jump by over 100 pts against Pedro past 100 pitches, yet manager Grady Little decided to go with his gut and leave Pedro in the game as the Yankees would rally to tie the game in the 8th inning and go on to win in extras.
Rich: Plaxico Burress and the Glock: The Giants were in the middle of a great season and Plaxico decided to go to a salsa club at 2am. The area is known as being “dangerous” so did Plaxico decide to use some of his millions of dollars and hire a security guard? Did he simply decide to stay home instead? No, he decided to take a fully-loaded and unregisterd (in New York) Glock with him to the club. Did he have the Glock in a holster? No, he had it in the waistband of his sweatpants (why he was wearing sweatpants to a club still baffles me). Of course, the Glock slid from his waistband and when he grabbed it, it fired. He shot himself in the leg and was very lucky to have not shot anyone else in the club. New York has some of the toughest gun laws in the cournty and they threw the book at Plax.
Adam: Tonya Harding vs Nancy Kerrigan: Prior to the 1994 US Championship Tonya Harding knew she couldn’t beat Nancy Kerrgigan. So what did she do? Try harder? Nope, she hired her ex-husband and her bodyguad to “whack” Kerrigan in the knee after practice and eliminate her from competion. It is not the mafia it’s figure skating. What an idiot. Harding did win though.
Kureen: Michael Jordan retires to play baseball: What do you do after you just won three NBA titles in a row? If your name is Michael Jordan you retire and go play baseball. If MJ was really bored and wanted to challenge himself then move to center and try to win a title at a new position. Leaving a sport at the top and moving to another sport at the lowest level is crazy. If Mike was great at baseball and was given a major league spot then maybe it makes since but to start in the minors? I don’t know about that. Mike is not Bo Jackson and even Bo didn’t leave football for baseball he played them both.
Fred: Joe Dumars and the Pistons drafting Darko Milicic with the 2nd pick: The next three picks were Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade. Darko played for the Pistons for only his first three years, playing a mere 34, 37, and 25 games in each season.
