Welcome to another edition of Writers’ Block. For those who don’t know, Writers’ Block is where all the Sports Unbiased Writers are asked to provide their thoughts on a topic every week.
Joining the Writers’ Block this week are JR Williams, Sammie Wright, Adam Solowiei, Rich Stowe, Kureen Paige, Fred Phillips and Kimani Gregoire.
This week, the topic is “who is the greatest New York Yankees player in their entire history?”
I myself have covered this topic several times for each site I’ve written for in the past. Sammie Wright and I were discussing this topic at work last week (we firmly disagreed) and so we decided to open the topic up to all the writers here at Sports Unbiased.
The New York Yankees are the most storied franchise in sports history. 27 World Series titles, many Hall of Famers (both players, managers and owners), and some of the greatest players in baseball history have worn the interlocking NY logo and pinstripes (some for their entire careers, others for one or more seasons). The Yankees are what all sports franchises want to be.
The only problem with a franchise like the Yankees is that they had so many great players playing for them, there is a debate about just who the greatest Yankees of all-time are. It was up to each writer to determine what made each player great and where they stand among the all-time Yankees greats and that’s what we have done.

July 11, 2013 at 3:07 pmFor a Yankee top 5 – you have Ruth,Gehrig,Mantle, and DiMaggio. In whatever order you want to put them. Even if I don’t agree with the order, as long as they are all there, it’s fine. The 5th is where it gets really interesting and tough. Do you go with Berra? Do you go with Jeter? Do you go with Rivera? –I’m going to choose Mariano! Yes I understand not an everyday player. But, the greatest at his position(in all of baseball) by a wide margin. For me, that wins out over the not everyday argument.
