Diego Costa scored twice as Atletico Madrid are through to the quarterfinals after a 4-1 win over AC Milan at the Vicente Calderon – a 5-1 aggregate win.
Costa, who scored the only goal in the 1-0 first leg win at San Siro, got Madrid off to a flying start with a header in the third minute before AC Milan leveled the match thanks to a goal by former Real Madrid star Kaka. AC Milan looked poised to take control of the match (and possibly the tie) and should’ve been up 2-1 but for a terrible missed header by Kaka. That miss let Atletico off the hook and they would go the go-ahead goal just a few minutes before half-time later courtesy of a deflected shot by Arda Turan.
Momentum fully on their side, Atletico came out firing in the second half. Raul Garcia would eventually seal the tie in the 70th minute with a third goal before Costa would wrap up the scoring with his second goal (and seventh overall in the Champions League).
Atletico Madrid are in the Champions League quarterfinals for the first time in 17 years. AC Milan’s elimination means that they are no more Italian clubs left in the competition.
