Ervin Santana UPDATE: March 9, 2014:
So much for Santana’s self imposed deadline. Orioles beat writer for the Baltimore Sun, Eduardo A. Encina, tweeted this yesterday afternoon,
It should be noted also that the Atlanta Braves ace Kris Medlen left his game Saturday with a forearm strain and a more serious injury has yet to be ruled out. Now with the possibility of a huge whole in their rotation rumors are flying that the Braves may now be in the mix to sign Santana. Since Santana is now willing to sign a one-year contract the prices of his offers should start rising. What looked like a done deal with either the Orioles or the Blue Jays at 5:00pm yesterday is now completely wide open. No other major announcement regarding Santana’s future were made today.
The Status of Free Agent Pitcher Ervin Santana: March 8, 2014
For the last big free agent left on the market and with MLB’s Opening Day fast approaching it’s looking like a soap opera of events are about to hit the fan. Sources say that Ervin Santana, who fired his agent last night, has narrowed the teams he may sign with down to the Toronto Blue Jays and the Baltimore Orioles. It has also been said that Santana has set a self-imposed deadline to make a decision by 5:00 PM Eastern Time today.
This saga is going back and forth, literally by the minute, right now. It was reported that he was taking the Blue Jay’s offer of $14 million for one-year, the same qualifying offer he rejected from the Kansas City Royals. Yet only minutes later sources, according to Outside Pitch’s Max Wildstein on Twitter,

The Orioles are reportedly offering $13 million for one-year plus approximately $2 million in incentives. With only a $1 million difference, it appears that Santana would prefer to go to Baltimore. The saga, however, continues and the finality may not be known until 5:00 PM on the East Coast.
