Men’s top seed Rafael Nadal defeated No. 25 Gaels Monfils with a 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 last night to advance to the fourth round. Up next is Kei Nishikori. The 16th-seeded Japanese defeated American Donald Young in straight sets.
Fourth-seeded Andy Murray defeated No. 26 Feliciano Lopez of Spain 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-2. Murray’s fourth round opponent will be unseeded Stephane Robert, who will be in the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.
No. 6 Roger Federer and No. 10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga both won in straight sets and will face each other in the fourth round. Federer defeated Tsonga here last year in the quarterfinals.
In a battle of young up-and-comers, No. 22 Grigor Dimitrov defeated No. 11 Milos Raonic to advance to the fourth round. He will next face Roberto Bautista Agut, who followed his upset victory over No. 5 Juan Martin del Potro with a straight sets victory over No. 27 Benoit Paire.
Women’s second seed Victoria Azarenka advanced to the fourth round with an easy 6-1, 6-0 win over Yvonne Meusberger. Her next opponent will be American Sloane Stephens, whom Azarenka defeated in the semifinals here last year.
Third seed Maria Sharapova had a easier time today as she defeated No. 25 Alize Cornet in straight sets. She advances to the fourth round where she will meet No. 20 Dominika Cibulkova.
No. 10 Caroline Wozniacki was upset by Garbine Muguruza Blanco of Spain in three sets. For her reward the unseeded 20-year old will face No. 5 Agnieszka Radwanska.
The other winners include No. 8 Jelena Jankovic and No.11 Simona Halep.
