Serena Williams overpowered Daniela Hantuchova 6-3, 6-3 as she advanced to the fourth round. With her 61st victory, Serena passes Aussie legend Margaret Court for most wins at the Australian Open in the Open era.
The top seed will next face 14th-seed Ana Ivanovic who beat home favorite Samantha Stosur 6-7(8), 6-4, 6-2 in a night match.
Two-time Aussie Open finalist Li Na had to survive a match point before overcoming No. 26 Lucie Safarova 1-6, 7-6(2), 6-3 in over two-and-a-half hours. She will meet No. 22 Ekaterina Makarova in the fourth round.
Other winners on the day include No. 9 Angelique Kerber, No. 28 Flavia Pennetta, No. 30 Eugenie Bouchard and Casey Dellacqua.
On the men’s seed, world number two Novak Djokovic sailed into the fourth round with a 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Denis Istomin. Next up for the defending champion is No.15 Fabio Fognini who defeated American Sam Querrey in straight sets.
Third seed David Ferrer wore down No. 29 Jeremy Chardy in the heat to reach the fourth round with a 6-2, 7-6(5), 6-2 victory. He next faces German Florian Mayer who upset No. 20 Jeremy Janowicz.
In another upset, ninth seed Richard Gasquet fell to No. 17 Tommy Robredo in four sets. Up next for Robredo is eighth seed Stan Wawrinka.
Also advancing to the fourth round are No. 7 Tomas Berdych and No. 19 Kevin Anderson.
