In a battle of former world number ones, Ana Ivanovic emerged victorious over Venus Williams in three grueling sets to claim the ASB Classic title at Auckland, New Zealand.
Ivanovic – who had just one win over the elder Williams sister in nine matches before today – cruised in the first set and was seemingly on her way to straight sets victory before being broken while serving for the match at 5-4. Venus would eventually rally to win the second set, but got down an early break in the final set. It was all that Ivanovic would need as she has able to hold off the American (as well as her nerves) to win her first title since 2011.
The 26-year old Serb will look to take some momentum from this tournament into the Australian Open as she looks to win her second Grand Slam title (she won the French Open in 2008).
