Call it the British Open or call it The Open Championship but either way there is an army of hardcore golfers that simply referred to the event as “The Open Championship.” In anticipation of this year’s edition of the British Open, I began to think about what has already been.
In honor of the upcoming event I thought it would be an exceptional idea to break down the Top-10 moments in British Open history. I perused tons of data to break down what I feel are the Top-10. What do you think? Agree? Disagree? Remember a memorable moment is not only snatching victory from defeat. It can also be snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Review the choices and let’s hear about it. I did my best to provide video footage wherever it was available. Without further ado here we go. I hope you enjoy the read as much as I enjoyed creating the list.
10: 1970 St. Andrews
Until Jan Van de Velde came along in 1999 Doug Sanders was the player people thought of when debating how to lose a British Open. Sanders had a two and a half foot putt to win the 1970 British Open over Jack Nicklaus. Unfortunately for Sanders he missed the putt. He went on to lose to Nicklaus the next day costing him his only real chance at a major championship in an otherwise impressive career.
