With the 2014 PGA Tour season about to hit full swing and the Hyundai Tournament of Champions about to kick off in Maui this week it is only fitting to take an advanced look at the 2014 Masters Tournament. One of the most prestigious and highly respected events on the planet will be taking center stage from April 10th thru 13th at Augusta National. The course was founded in part by the best amateur to ever play the game, Bobby Jones. Since its inception the Masters has been a landmark in the golfing world. Las Vegas has done all of us a favor and released its futures odds for this year’s edition of the landmark event.
In a not to shocking release, Tiger Woods is the early betting favorite at 11/2 with Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott and the Field (Any other golfer not listed in the odds chart) all as the second choice at 12/1. There is some interesting value so early in the season. You do not have to look far past Dustin Johnson and Jason Day at 25/1, Hunter Mahan at 40/1, Jordan Spieth at 50/1 or Billy Horschel at 100/1.
Yes I am aware that they have not even teed it up at the Tournament of Champions but that is the beauty about Futures. If you can get it right then you can make quite the payday for a limited bankroll. Let’s look at some live long shots early in the season.
Jason Day (25/1)
He has the game to win a Major Championship but prior to 2013 the case could be made against this idea but just take a look at how well he played in the Majors. Jason finished third at the Masters, tied for second at the US Open, tied for 32nd at The Open Championship and tied for eighth at the PGA Championship.
Another point to consider is that Jason Day is aligning his schedule to prepare and peak at golf’s biggest events. Players like Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson have done this in the past when they felt they were close to breaking through. I must believe that Jason has the same thoughts. Is it a guarantee? Of course not but at 25/1 I like the price.
Jordan Spieth (50/1)
I am aware that Jordan will be a sheik pick at long odds just makes sense. Lucky for futures bettors that the Masters isn’t horse racing because I guarantee you are not getting these odds on the youngster in a couple of months. This will be his first professional start at Augusta but this is a man with no fear. When you hole out to force a three-way playoff and battle to a victory you have ice in your veins.
He did not fare well in the majors last season but lest not forget he was not even fully exempt to the start the season. He ended the year with a victory, a Presidents Cup victory and an incredible run throughout the FedExCup Playoffs culminating in a tie for second at the Tour Championship. He finished 17th in his first start of the season and I would not be surprised to see him capture his first major in April at an incredible 50/1.
Billy Horschel (100/1)
He first tasted victory in 2013 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with an impressive 20 under par performance and also garnered his first Major Championship top-5 at the US Open. He excelled in stats that can be considered transferable like top-10 in many PGA Tour performance stats including but not limited to Birdie Average, Total Driving and All-Around. He was also second on tour in Total Putting.
This will be Billy’s first start in the Masters but his new found confidence should help with the jitters. A deciding factor is who he gets paired with to start out the week. At the end of the day I get an up and coming player who has a win at 100/1? I will take that every day.
