Impact News: The NFL appears to be continuing their suspension frenzy with the suspension of San Diego Chargers Tight End Antonio Gates. Gates will miss the opening four games of the 2015 NFL season after testing positive for banned substances. Of course, Gates released the predictable statement that he did not knowingly take performance enhancing drugs. He did admit that he should have done his “due diligence” before ingesting them.
Short Term Impact: San Diego will feel the effect of Gates missing the opening four games. Three of the four games are against expected playoff teams or at least teams with a realistic shot at the playoffs. Rivers has counted on Gates his whole career and has enjoyed the fact that gates has not missed a game in over two seasons. Rivers and the San Diego offense will have to adjust in order to start the year .500.
Long Term Impact: The Chargers season is not lost if they can find a way to split the opening four games of the season while Gates sits out his suspension. Gates will need to show up in “football shape” for week five and cannot afford to work himself back into game shape.
In the meantime, the Chargers will be forced to finally see what the heir apparent to Gates, Ladarius Green finally has in store. While his overall numbers the last two seasons have not been phenomenal, it should be noted that Gates has not declined the way most thought and that kept Green out of the mix.
If Green delivers than the Chargers know the future is bright. If he does not, then the Chargers should start scouting college for the next tight end to draft in the first round. That in itself can have a huge long term impact for the Chargers organization.
