Just a touching movie. The movie is about Lou Gehrig so the end is already written but the story and reverence used to get to the unavoidable sad end was top notch. Following the life of Lou Gehrig from stickball to the disease that took his life is gut wrenching. The “Luckiest Man” speech is a visual you will never forget and throw in Babe Ruth playing himself and you are left with a quality baseball movie.
9. Bang the Drum Slowly

This 1973 film is touching as Michael Moriarty played the star pitcher and Robert DeNiro played the dying catcher. Many would argue that Bang the Drum Slowly ushered in the era of the modern baseball movie. A tear jerker without a doubt followed the developing bond of Moriarty and DeNiro as DeNiro’s character is dying of Hodgkin’s disease. This movie is well done and will pull at your heart strings.
8. Eight Men Out

If you know about baseball, you must know about the “Black Sox” and the scandal that surrounded a corrupt World Series. This film does not attempt to hide the corruption and power wielded by some in the game. Eight Men Out, while not an emotional tear jerker, does a great job displaying the accounts and actions of a dark time in the history of the game.
7. A League of Their Own

Everyone remembered the All American Girls Professional Baseball League right? Probably not until you saw A League of Their Own. While not historically accurate it was a solid film that earns points for reminding baseball fan about contributions to the game of baseball. Thanks to this film and more specifically Tom Hanks, everyone knows “There is no crying in baseball!”
6. The Bad News Bears

A welcome addition to this list is a comedy about Little League baseball. This movie has everything from a “special” down on his luck manager to a group of young foul mouthed kids. Anyone that played the game at a young age can find numerous relatable moments in this 1976 film. If you do not laugh until you cry at least three times in this film then you are missing the point.
