No matter which way the results went in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, we were always going to guaranteed of a star-studded semifinals thanks to the quality of the eight clubs that were remaining in the tournament. And when three of the four semifinalists are Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich, then football fans everywhere should be in for a treat.
In one semifinal we have Chelsea, lead of course by Jose Mourinho who is trying to become the first manager to lead three different clubs to Champions League glory but has failed to get past this stage the past three seasons (when he managed Real Madrid). They will face Atletico Madrid, who are fighting to upset the established order in both Spain (La Liga) and Europe. Atletico may lack the depth and financial muscle of the other three semifinalists, but they play hard and they play as a unit. One has to credit manager – and former player – Diego Simeone for changing the culture and attitude of the club since becoming manager in 2011. Atletico are trying to get to the final of this competition for the first time in 40 years. Then of course, we have the marquee matchup between arguably the two best clubs in the world in Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Nothing else needs to be said right there!
The first legs will be held on April 22 and 23 with the return legs one week later (April 29 and 30). The club with the higher aggregate (more goals scored over both legs) will advance to the Champions League final in Lisbon.
Here is the fixture for the Champions League semifinals:
