We found out today that Tim Tebow did not make the cut with the Patriots and has been released. No one knows for sure what the reasons behind it are. It could be because he was not going to make the team as a QB, or because he was not going to make the team as a TE, or maybe because he was unwilling to play TE, or any other number of reasons that we are not privy to.
What we do know is that, as of now, Tim Tebow does not have a team to play in the NFL with. Not too long after he was cut, Tebow took to Twitter and had this to say:
“I would like to thank Mr. (Robert) Kraft, coach (Bill) Belichick, coach (Josh) McDaniels and the entire Patriots organization for giving me the opportunity to be a part of such a classy organization, I pray for nothing but the best for you all. I will remain in relentless pursuit of continuing my lifelong dream of being an NFL quarterback.”
What everyone wants to know now is this, what’s next? Will Tebow find another job in the NFL? Will he ever get a chance to fulfill that dream and be an NFL Quarterback? Will he get a regular job in another position? Where does he go from here?
I’m not here to trash a man for trying to do something he loves, something he may have been the absolute best at while in college (the argument is pretty easy to make that Tebow was, if not the best, in the conversation for the best QB in college football history). We’ve all heard the arguments about how he doesn’t have the skills or mechanics to be an NFL starting QB. I don’t know if that’s true or not, there have been some pretty non-standard people as QB over the years who managed to be successful. There’s no denying how successful he was as a starter with Denver, even if it was only for a quarter at a time.
To answer the question of where Tebow goes next, we have to get an idea of what coaches might be looking for in a player like Tebow. Some coaches might be looking for a wildcat package type QB, others might be looking for a change of pace RB, still others might be looking for a TE.
Personally, I believe Tebow could excel as a TE, he has the size and the hands to be a good receiver, the drive to do the job right (which means he’d learn how to block), and the skills with the ball in his hand to make people miss and rack up the YAC (Yards After Catch).
Tebow would probably also make a pretty good RB for a team. Maybe not an every down back, but a change of pace guy, a team with a speed back who needs a bruiser once in a while to plow in to the D-linemen or the Linebackers and let them know they’re in for a fight.
However, is Tebow willing to make that transition? I don’t know the answer to that question. I would think that, if the opportunity was there, a reasonable person would jump at it instead of trying to shoehorn their way in to a position no one thinks they fit in to. Whether Tebow thinks that way or not is another story though.
I think Tebow is done in the NFL. We may see stories about him here or there for another year or two – This or that organization giving him a chance, much like the Patriots did this year, and then cutting him before the season starts.
The reason I believe that is because I don’t think Tebow is willing to transition away from QB, and I’m pretty sure there’s not a team in the NFL who wants him as a QB at this point in time. It’s a shame because, for me, he’s a kid I want to root for. I know a lot of people have gotten sick of hearing about him, or seeing him. I know some of his more ardent supporters can be a bit annoying when talking about how perfect he is. I get all of that, but, at the heart of this is just a young man who is very secure in his faith, who wants to do well at his chosen profession, and who thinks he has the tools to excel at that profession. So, I’ll keep hoping that some team takes a flyer on him, convinces him to change positions, and he goes on to have a successful NFL career.
