The New York Knicks are off to their best start since the early Patrick Ewing days; back when the Knicks were truly a force to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference. I’m talking back when Micheal Jordan would break their hearts every year in the playoffs. Do you remember now?
I award most of the credit for the New York Knicks success to Mike Woodson and his system of defense and 3-point offense. Mike Woodson has the ability to make players buy into his system of ball movement and sharing the ball. The team’s 3-point shooting success makes it difficult for most teams to stop. Tyson Chandler is also a huge reason the Knicks are so successful defensively. Chandler is among the top 10 players in the league in rebounds and 1st in field goal percentage. Carmelo Anthony is among the top 5 players in scoring, unfortunately his name doesn’t appear in multiple league leading categories when compared to players like Lebron James or Kevin Durant; both are among the league leaders in rebounds, and scoring.
Carmelo Anthony has shown some signs of promise on the defensive side of the court but every game or two you will notice his lack luster commitment to fast break defense and his occasional complaining to the refs while the opposing team scores multiple fast breaks points. Until Anthony can buy into playing basketball on both sides of the floor, he will not be the league MVP. In my opinion Anthony is 100 percent offense and 70 percent defense and he will never go above that level. The fact that Amare Stoudemire is set to return makes the Knicks much more better on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. I guarantee Kevin Durant wins the league MVP over Melo.
