Without a doubt, Lebron James is the best professional basketball player in the game right now, he is a back to back NBA champion and a four time NBA MVP award winner who continues to dominate the league. The Miami Heat are one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference and many have picked them to raise yet another NBA championship banner in 2014. James’s list of accomplishments will continue to grow, with that being said you might as well add “Athlete of the Year” to his long list of awards and accolades.

James was announced Thursday as The Associated Press‘ 2013 Male Athlete of the Year, becoming only the third basketball player ever to capture the award since the awards began in 1931.  According to AP, James received 31 of 96 votes cast in a poll of news organizations, beating Peyton Manning (20) and Jimmie Johnson (7).

Lebron James joins the great company of Michael Jordan (three time Athlete of the Year) and Larry Bird as the only NBA players to win the award. Past winners include Michael Phelps, Aaron Rodgers, and Drew Brees.
