There was talk of an Allen Iverson come back. The Dallas Mavericks-owned Texas Legends of the NBA’s D-League offered him a spot. One would think, go to the D-League, show you still have something to offer and accept your role on some NBA roster. Sounds like the opportunity an aging player looking for one last chance at a championship would jump all over.
We found out this path to get back in the league is not the one Iverson wanted to take. Iverson tweeted:
I thank Donnie and Dallas for the consideration and while I think the D-League is a great opportunity, it is not the route for me.

Not in the NBA since 2010, Iverson, 37, last played briefly in China but never signed any deal keeping him overseas. He’s been public with his desire to return to the NBA and with the success of players such as Jason Kidd, 39, Kurt Thomas, 40, and Grant Hill also 40, you would think A.I. would get another chance to show off that cross-over he’s so famous for. The Mavericks seemed the right team to audition for, they are hurting for guards and just signed Mike James, 37, from the Texas Legends for the rest of the season after completing two 10-day contracts.
Turning down this offer doesn’t seem to offer Iverson many options back in the NBA. No one offered him a roster spot during the lockout-shortened season where teams were playing games back-to-back and needed depth on the bench. With teams in need of back court help, Lakers come to mind losing Steve Blake and having no real backup for an aging Steve Nash, Iverson again was not seen as a viable option.
Only Iverson knows what’s an acceptable path for him back to the NBA hardwood. Maybe he’s waiting for the Knicks to add another older, former all-star to their roster? With the signing of Rasheed Wallace they have shown willingness to sign older players out of the game for a while. Maybe he’s waiting for a contender to suffer an injury to an All-Star point guard; Boston Celtics anyone? No one knows, but for us that follow A.I. on Twitter, he left us with this:
To my fans, I love yall! Not a day goes by that I am not asked when am I coming back, we all must accept my return is not up to just me.
