Yes I am aware that 2013 is not officially over but we are getting pretty close so what better way to enjoy the holiday season than ranking the Top-10 Sports Moments of 2013. For the exclusive purpose of creating this list any event that occurred in this calendar year counts so even a moment from last season’s NFL playoffs would count as long as it happened in this calendar year. What will be the greatest moment of 2013? A Feel Good moment? An NBA moment? A college moment? I am not giving anything away early so without further adieu I present a ranking of the Top-10 Sports Moments of 2013.

10. New Rochelle vs. Mt. Vernon High School Championship Buzzer Beater Madness

With 2.9 seconds left in the sectional title game Mt. Vernon led by two points and New Rochelle had to go the length of the court. The game should be in the bag but then it would not have made this list. The pass was thrown in and into the hands of a Mt. Vernon player who tossed the ball up in the air to bleed the clock but it was not good enough. However, not all things end the way you expect. Check out this improbable ending.

9. Diana Nyad Becomes First Person to Swim From Cuba To US without a Cage

This was not her first attempt to accomplish the swim from Cuba to the United States. In fact she had tried a total of five times over a 35 year span but the final time she made the swim in 53 hours. She accomplished the feat at an age, 64, when most people are trying to figure out how to bend down and put a golf tee in the ground. She made the 100+ mile swim while battling fatigue, rough seas, wind and the threat sharks, jellyfish and other issues. A truly impressive feat.

8. Boston Bruins Miracle Comeback In Game 7 of Eastern Conference Quarterfinals

The Boston Bruins trailed the Toronto Maple Leafs by a score of 4-1 in the final period of Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. Boston still trailed Toronto by two goals with 90 seconds left in the game. However, everything changed when Boston managed to score two goals in just over 30 seconds. The Bruins won the game in overtime. Unfortunately for the Boston faithful the magic did not carry over to the Stanley Cup finals as they fell to the Blackhawks. A remarkable feat nevertheless.

7. No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast over No. 2 Georgetown in the NCAA Tournament

The Georgetown Hoyas had to feel good about getting a number two seed in the NCAA Tournament and even better about facing 15 seed Florida Gulf Coast. Florida Gulf Coast had only been a D1 program for two years, was making its first appearance at the Big Dance and should be a cake walk into the round of 32. With the Hoyas attempting to close the gap late in the second half the NCAA Tournament was witness to a Pickup Game moment that nobody will soon forget. The stunned Hoyas never recovered

6. Andy Murray Wins Wimbledon

Andy Murray became the first British man to won Wimbledon in 77 long years. It is hard to fathom but it had been over seven decades since the feat had occurred. The year prior Murray came close but lost in the finals to Rodger Federer. In 2013 he would not be denied winning the final in three sets over a game Novak Djokovic. The Olympic Gold medalist has cemented his legacy in the eyes of his home country and the tennis world.
