Aside from the name, “pelican”, I must say this logo is quite impressive. According to the NBA.com Hornets page, the pelican has been a symbol of Louisiana since the 1800s. The pelican population in Louisiana was near extinction in the 1960s. The pelican has overcome near extinction and one of the worst oil spills in US history.
Is it me or does the pelican logo resemble the Atlanta Hawks logo and team colors. The Blue represents the state flag of Louisiana, the gold mirrors the colors in the New Orleans flag, and tertiary red represents one blood and one unit of players.
Pelicans have soared the skies for more than 30 million years; you can spot them more frequent near coastal waters where they feed primarily on fish. There are references to the pelican in Christianity literature and religious hymns. The pelican bird is a national bird of Barbados and several other Caribbean countries. The pelican is also used as the mascot for Tulane University and Louisiana State University. The logo is very aggressive and despite the name, it should look great on the new NBA uniforms. Keep in mind we have teams with more non-lethal logos, teams like the Pittsburgh Penguins, who are one of the NHL’s most popular teams. Then again, I see the connection with a penguin and ice hockey, I don’t see the connection with a pelican and pro basketball.
So what do you think of the New Orleans Pelican NBA logo? Hot or Not?
