Lance Armstrong is going to do a sit-down with Oprah Winfrey today (the interview will air on Thursday this week). Many outlets are reporting that he may confess to doping, however, other outlets are saying that he’s going to basically say something vague like “it was very prevalent in the sport at the time.”
Armstrong gave up his fight against USADA months ago and had his Tour de France titles and every other title he won in his “amazing” comeback from testicular cancer stripped. The evidence USADA made public was very damaging. It showed that not only did Armstrong dope during his riding career, but he was pretty much the mastermind behind a massive doping ring.
When Lance sits down with Oprah, he better be prepared to fully acknowledge everything he did. Oprah is a fantastic interviewer and knows exactly how to press someone to get the answers she wants and what she knows her viewers want. If Lance’s goal today is to dance around an admission, he better be prepared to fully admit to everything and to finish the interview in tears – this is Oprah’s wheelhouse. Climbing the Alps in July will be a cakewalk compared to what he’s going to face today.
Only a full admission from Armstrong will help him in restoring his name. His legacy is forever tarnished though, no matter what he says today. I’m not sure what the legal ramifications would be for Armstrong if he does admit to doping of any form, but I do know he’s in for a tough battle against Oprah.
Update: Per Oprah, Lance was “forthcoming” in his interview which lasted for 2 1/2 hours. Tune in Thursday night to the OWN network to see the interview (and if he broke down in tears like he reportedly did when he addressed the Livestrong Foundation on Monday prior to the interview).
