Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS and it appeared that the Boston Red Sox were finally going to reverse the curse. In that game, Pedro Martinez was tearing up Yankee hitters. The Yankees got to Pedro and the game went to extra innings setting the stage for a possible dramatic finish.
Prior to the game Aaron Boone was taken out of the starting lineup due to poor performance throughout the series. Boone was called upon to enter the game as a pinch runner in the 8th inning. After Mariano Rivera was stretched out for three nail biting scoreless innings Boone was due up in the bottom of the 11th. He stepped to the plate with a chance to redeem himself and live out every baseball player’s childhood dream. The rest is history. In a later interview Aaron Boone explained what he was thinking when he stepped to the plate:
“As I’m walking up to the plate, initially I was thinking about taking a pitch. And on my way up there, I kind of changed my thought and said ‘forget that.’ You know, ‘you’ve been thinking too much this series. Just go up there and get a good pitch to hit. The first pitch was a good pitch to hit … and I got a good piece of one.”
