USA versus Russia. Democracy versus Communism. Amateurs versus “professionals.”: The 1980 Olympics
had it all, including arguably the greatest single moment in US Olympic History. This game was also one of the biggest upsets in sports history as the US beat Russia (though it wasn’t for the Gold Medal – that game came later).
This game also included one of the best announcer calls in sports. Up until 1980, the most famous announcing call was The Shot Heard Round the World. Then, in the winter of 1980, Al Michaels uttered the most famous line, “Do you believe in miracles!?”
