Four players have been suspended as a result of Sunday afternoon’s on-field brawl between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers.
Carlos Gomez, who was said to have instigated the situation when he exchanged words with Pirates pitcher Gerrit Cole, headlined the names of suspensions and will be suspended for three games. Milwaukee’s Martin Maldonado was also suspended five games for punching Milwaukee’s Travis Snider during the benches-clearing altercation.
Snider was suspended for two games for his part in the incident, and the Pirates catcher Russell Martin will be held out of one game. All of the players were fined an undisclosed amount. Gomez, Martin, and Snider will all appeal their suspensions, but all three will be in Tuesday’s starting lineups. Maldonado did not appeal the fine and will begin serving his suspension immediately.
The incident occurred after Gomez threw his bat after he hit what he thought was a solo home run in the third inning of Easter Sunday’s showdown. The ball would stay in the park and Gomez would stretch his hit to a triple. Gerrit Cole didn’t take the celebration too well and began jawing with Gomez on third base. Once words were exchanged, the benches cleared, and the pushing and shoving began.
The video below shows how quickly the altercation erupted. The Brewers would go on to win 3-2.
