Cristiano Ronaldo continued his torrid goal-scoring pace with two more goals in Real Madrid’s 3-1 home victory over Schalke.
Los Blancos came into the match having dispatched Schalke 6-1 in the first leg at Germany, their place in the quarterfinals almost assured. However, they came out looking to add to their tally and it took Ronaldo a little over 20 minutes to get on the scoresheet.
The home side had several chances to extend their lead, but Alvaro Morata (playing for the injured Karim Benzema) couldn’t convert on some rather easy chances. It allowed the visitors to grab a first-half equalizer when Tim Hoogland’s shot deflected off Real defender Sergio Ramos and into the net.
But Real Madrid would continue to threaten for the rest of the match with relative ease. The match was sealed in the second half with two goals within a minute. Ronaldo with his second in the 74th minute, followed by Morata cleaning up after another Ronaldo shot hit the bar.
Real’s night however were spoiled by the injury to their young star Jese, who was stretchered off the pitch within the first five minutes of the match with what was lately confirmed as a torn anterior cruciate ligament. He will miss the rest of the season.
