Free agent starting pitcher Ervin Santana is now looking for a one year deal that he can sign before the beginning of the season. Throughout the off-season, Santana has been looking for a deal in the neighborhood of four years/$60 million. Without serious contenders in that ballpark and with Opening Day fast approaching it appears that he has changed his tune.
Santana is the biggest fish left on the market with Matt Garza, Ubaldo Jimenez and others all signing contracts this off-season. But where could Santana land with his new direction? As I suggested six weeks ago the Arizona Diamondbacks could make a move for Santana especially given his one year terms. The Diamondbacks have a predominantly young core including Archie Bradley, Patrick Corbin and Wade Miley. Add a veteran like Santana for one year to go with the added Bronson Arroyo and the Diamondbacks could come up smelling like roses. In fact with Trevor Cahill healthy as well you could see a very deep pitching staff in Phoenix.
Another possible landing location for Santana might be Baltimore. The Orioles could be intrigued to add talent like Santana for one year. Adding Santana to the newly signed Jimenez and the Orioles could be set up for a better 2014 that many might have expected. The Orioles will score runs and adding Santana will add another slice to a good but not great rotation.
