- Wimbledon champion Andy Murray showed little rust as he cruised to a 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Japan’s Go Soeda in his first round match in just 85 minutes. The three-time Australian Open runner-up is four months removed from back surgery.
- Two-time defending champion Victoria Azarenka overcame a slow start, and scorching temperatures (it was over 100 degrees) to win her first round match against Johanna Larson. Third seed Maria Sharapova also struggled but ultimately triumphed over American Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-3, 6-4.
- Roger Federer began his 57th consecutive Grand Slam tournament with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 win over local wilcard James Duckworth. It was a tough day for the locals overall, as Lleyton Hewitt bowed out in five sets and Bernard Tomic is forced to retire hurt during his match against world number one Rafael Nadal.
- Winners on the women’s side include No. 5 Agnieszka Radwanska, No. 8 Jelena Jankovic, No. 10 Caroline Wozniacki and No. 13 Sloane Stephens.
- Men’s winners include No. 5 Juan Martin del Potro, No. 10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, No. 11 Milos Raonic, No. 22 Grigor Dimitrov and No. 25 Gael Monfils.
- American number one John Isner was forced to retire from his match against Martin Klizan due to an ankle injury. No. 21 seed Philipp Kohlscreiber withdrew from the tournament due to a hamstring injury.
